Centennial College |
Centennial College is Ontario’s first community college, established in 1966, primarily serving the eastern portion of the Greater Toronto Area through four campuses and six satellite locations. It has a record of exemplary teaching, innovative programming and extensive partnership building. Centennial is recognized as one of the most culturally diverse post-secondary institutions in Canada. Almost 100 ethnocultural groups are represented and 80 languages are spoken on campus.
Centennial is committed to both broad public access and successful career education. It offers more than 95 diploma and certificate programs on a full-time and Continuing Education basis in business, communication arts, community and consumer services, engineering technology, health and transportation. These career-oriented programs emphasize practical experience with laboratory learning, industry and agency placements, as well as co-op education. Students also prepare for college and university through the General Arts and Science program, and English language training. Centennial supports enrolments of 12,600 full-time students and 35,000 in Continuing Education.
Degree programs
Centennial offers a variety of innovative degree programs. Five joint-degree programs in paramedicine, journalism, new media, environmental science and industrial microbiology are being taught in conjunction with the University of Toronto at Scarborough, and the Bachelor of Science Nursing program is delivered jointly with Ryerson University and George Brown College. Centennial was among the first colleges in the province to receive approval to commence an applied-degree program. The college now has three, in computer and communication networking; software systems: design, development and management; and integrated accounting and information technology management.
New campus
Centennial HP Science and Technology CentreFor the first time in 25 years, the college has opened a major campus: the Centennial HP Science and Technology Centre at the University of Toronto at Scarborough. The facility supports programs in health sciences, business, engineering technology and new media. Students make use of a wireless computing infrastructure supplied by partners HP and Avaya. The campus design, with its interior streets and Spanish steps, was provided by architectural firm Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg.
New Media Centre
Centennial's Centre for Creative CommunicationsCentennial's Centre for Creative Communications in East York is one of Canada’s best interactive multimedia training facilities. This high-tech campus represents a $37-million investment in technology, including $17 million from the private sector. It is renowned for its strong industry connections and ability to produce highly skilled graduates.
Transportation
Centennial's Ashtonbee CampusThe college operates the nation’s largest transportation training facility with more than $30 million worth of aircraft, vehicles and equipment on hand at Ashtonbee Campus. The highly innovative Modified Apprenticeship Programs (MAPs) were created with partners Ford, General Motors, Honda, Toyota, Canadian Tire, Freightliner and Volvo Trucks Canada. Students are educated on name-brand technology in world-class labs.
Almost 600 business, industry, government and labour leaders serve on individual program advisory committees, which guide the direction of Centennial’s career-oriented programs and keep them responsive and relevant to the needs of the employment market. Centennial employs 2,000 full- and part-time faculty and staff, and has an annual operating budget of approximately $142 million.
